Milan is buzzing with designers, top-models and media moguls. Maroccans provide the body of service staff and african umbrellas are on offer at every street corner as soon as the first drop of rain hits the pavement. All roads don't lead to Rome any more, Milan is the in-destination. And droves of young Italian creatives and hopefuls flock to Milan just like the French flock to Paris. It is the place to be for those who want to make it big. Over half of the 200 largest Italian companies have their headquarters in Milan, above all the media corporations, advertising firms, designers and the stock market. The largest employers in Rome on the other hand are the government and the Vatican. The fast-paced career-orientated life in Milan can be a shock for many entering the workplace, but visitors have it much easier. You can stroll down the world famous fashion strip Via Montenapoleone and let yourself be amused by the colourful people traffic passing by the shopfront windows, without having to seriously consider buying a €1500 pullover. Afterwards, you can admire the gothic cathedral and stroll by the neighbouring dome Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele II and visit the La Skala opera house in the evening. In the meantime the Milanese and the mass of commuters must work hard to afford their Dolce & Gabbana and pricey apartments.
