The people of Copenhagen always name themselves as the happiest city dwellers in Europe when asked in surveys. Where does this feeling come from? Perhaps it’s the Danish “Hygge”, which is a combination of cosiness, conviviality and comradeship, and is a major part of the pulse of the capital city.
The inner city of Copenhagen is almost car-free. Of course, this is ideal for tourists; when strolling around the quaint alleyways, you quickly feel the sense of calm that is typical for the people of Copenhagen. Each district of Copenhagen has its own particular flair, and every neighbourhood has a square with at least two cafes or bars on it. Irrespective of the temperatures, at first light the people of Copenhagen love to get outdoors, and of course, you can do the same and join them. To acquaint yourself with the locals, head for the trendy districts of Vesterbro and Nørrebro. However, it doesn’t matter where you go, it certainly won’t be cheap! You’ll find yourself in one of the most expensive cities in Europe. In its favour though, you can hire bicycles for free or walk around on pavements so clean you could eat your dinner off them, and travel with the most modern underground system in the world! The trains are driverless; this means the seats at the front of the train, with a perfect view of the tunnel ahead, are the most coveted! Perhaps you’ll get a place right up top if you travel on the underground outside of rush hour! Another must see is Tivoli, the oldest amusement park in the world. It has a colourful combination of amusement arcades and carousels, as well as restaurants and concerts.
