The largest and most popular park in town offers everything for everybody. Apart from jogging, walking or picnicking, the park also attracts theatre and film fans. Vondelpark accommodates the Dutch Film Museum in one of his pavilions and an open-air stage for concerts and theatre plays during the summer months.
The Film Museum’s collection comprises 35,000 films. It also exhibits posters, photos and stage props. At the Film Museum, you get a great overview of the international film history, from its beginnings in the 19th century to today. The Museum at Parkpaviljeon is an absolute must for every cineaste.
Concerts and performances on the open-air stage are free. The stage hosts a great variety of performances on five days a week during June, July and August.
Vondelpark was simply called “The New Park” in the past. In 1867, two years after its opening, it was renamed after the poet Joost van den Vondel. The development of the park area is of special interest. A group of notable citizen bought eight hectares of land in 1864 planning to create a public park in British fashion. Thirteen years later the park founders had raised enough money to quadruple the area of Vondelpark.
