Markthalle

This is where the Art Nouveau proponents had their way. Between 1911 and 1914 the covered market was built under the direction of Martin Elsaesser and spruced up with frescoes by Heinrich Gref and Gustav Rümelin. Naturally, the hall, which is reputed to be one of the most beautiful in Europe, is a listed monument. The highlight is the glass ceiling, which spans the hall, creating a great atmosphere and certainly putting the merchants' products in the best light.

37 merchants offer their goods on 5,000 m². Try something here and there and then decide what you would like for your picnic. Magnificent cheeses, international wines, fresh fruit and vegetables, an unusual spice or dish – the market is a paradise for amateur chefs and gourmets. And if the great selection of fine foods makes your stomach grumble, then you can go to the market restaurant Empore or try one of the small bistros that have conveniently sprung up all around the hall.

While on the ground floor everything is about food, the first floor houses the department store “Merz und Benzing”. You can get home accessories and beautifully designed furniture, books and cosmetics here. And if you don't feel like that, then you can just enjoy the look down: From up here the bustling market almost seems like an oriental bazaar.
