World cultural heritage of UNESCO since 1975, a branch of the National Museum of History, situated in the foot of Vitosha mountain and at the same time not far from Sofia city center, Boyana church is famous with its enchanting architecture and frescos from different periods and legends of its founders and masters.
Built in the 11 century with mural paintings from 11, 13 and 14-15 c., the most acknowledged images are from 1259 and represent the founders Sebastocrator Kaloyan and his wife Dessislava and their patrons - King Constantin Assen and Queen Irina, very rare for this time of history. The portraits are in full height and look solemn, but real. The master remains unknown, but it is sure that his style of drawing and the mixed fresco-tempera technique clearly show his connection to the Tarnovo drawing school.
One of the invaluable medieval written monuments of the 12 c. contains 109 parchment sheets and gives information about the oldest alphabet of the Bulgarians - the Glagolitic.
