From the airport to the city
The Munich Franz Josef Strauß Airport is located a little out of town, about 28 kilometres northeast of Munich. It’s the second biggest air traffic hub in Germany, after Frankfurt am Main. Calling it by its full name after the late Bavarian heavyweight politician is not very common, though – in general people talk about the Munich Airport.
As yet there is no connection to the national railways, but one to the regional suburban railway. With the lines S1 and S8 it takes about 40 to 45 minutes to the centre of Munich, and during the day the trains run about every ten minutes. A single ticket costs 9.60 euros. However, if you want to continue using public transport, it’s worth getting the day ticket for 10.40 euros. With the Lufthansa Airport Bus it takes about 40 minutes to the centre, while you reach Munich Nord in about 25 minutes. A one-way ticket costs 10.50 euros.
If you prefer a more comfortable ride there are plenty of taxis. A ride to the city centre costs roughly 55,- euros.
