The gigantic building leaves no doubt about the importance the Communist regime attributed to information. Up until the dictatorship’s demise of course, anything but independent journalism was practiced behind Press House’s substantial walls.
Here news was doctored by the state for public consumption. During that period the building was known unofficially as the “House of Lies”. This former symbol of state control continues to impress today by its sheer size and monumental architecture. It is a good match for the other ungainly, megalomaniac buildings. In front of the House of the Free Press now stands a creative sculpture exemplifying the spirit and outlook of today’s Romania.
