The true Viennese Melange? A mix between elitist club scene, cynical corner pub philosophers, and congenial sociability. In Vienna, the Schmäh (the Austrian joke in all its forms…) runs just as fast during the day, as the turntables spin at night. Those who want to be In in Vienna go to the happening clubs. Yet those who are really In go to the places where the coolest DJs turn the tables, partying non-stop. You should stop at some point, though, since a daytime stroll through Vienna’s districts is pure inspiration. Every Grätzl (neighbourhood) is different, says the Viennese. In the second district the bobos meet for brunch at the Karmelitermarkt, in order to then hang out in a hammock in the Augarten. The ninth belongs to the students, who sit through their studies in their favourite bars or enjoy campus life. In the eighth people are a little bit more settled: Hip green voters with a preference for whole food shops and small, chic bars. The 16th district is multicultural, alluring with the lively Brunnenmarkt, and it has brought to life a corner stone of Viennese wellbeing: The “16er-Blech”, also known as Ottakringer Beer in a can. In the seventh you shop. For beginners there is the Mariahilferstraße with all the international labels. The more advanced try out the side streets, find the Neubaugasse with its small boutiques and end up for an aperitif in the Museum Quarter. If you still haven’t got enough, you continue to stroll to the Freihausviertel, walking right through the gate to the creative scene: Between galleries and designer boutiques, vintage and speciality shops everyone is rambling who is either hip or on her way to lunch at the popular Naschmarkt. Sounds great? It is.
