When you get out of the metro station, the Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) is right in front of you. Go around the building before you enter the church, and pay attention to the details: In the frieze at the main door, for example, basilisks and dragons have been eyeing visitors suspiciously since the 13th century, and inside the animal theme is continued by pelican, ox, donkey and toad.
As soon as the people have made it through the huge main entrance, the masses will disperse into the inside of the cathedral. Take time to explore the nave, choir stalls, and chapels, before heading up the 343 steps to the top for a view over Vienna. Back on the ground you continue to the “Stock im Eisen”(a tree trunk that has been covered with nails) at the square with the same name. The legend reminds us that we can trick the devil. How? Find out for yourself!
Tip: In front of the cathedral there is the Manner shop, selling the famous waffles in all different forms.
