The Prater makes the eyes of younger and older children shine and attracts just about every tourists and many Viennese. The amusement park was born in 1766, after the Emperor had made the area available for general merriment. Aside from nostalgic delights such as shooting galleries, merry-go-rounds and bumper car, there are also high-speed-boomerang, rollercoaster-loopings or bungee-ejection-seats. Those with a great risk appetite go for casinos, amusement arcades and haunted houses, and those with a real appetite for candy floss or Langos (type of Hungarian bread).
And in the midst of all this hustle and bustle the Viennese landmark, the Ferris wheel, goes round and round. All the way up there, on top of the wheel, you will see that the Prater is much more than a big amusement park. The green Prater is one of the biggest recreation centres in Vienna, offering meadows, forests and expanses of water. Through it runs the 4.5 km long Praterhauptallee, the city’s main course for runners, bicyclers and flaneurs. Tip: For untouristy beer and a truly Viennese snack culture go to the Fluc at the Praterstern.
